A little hit, but miraculous place in the Yunnan Province is Tiger Leaping Gorge — a brutal, but ridiculously gorgeous, two-day trek that takes you above, and then in, one of the world’s deepest canyons. Just got back from two glorious days spent scrambling and shuffling along this amazing ridge. A few pics from the trek:
(Quitao, the town at the entrance of the gorge)
(Looking along the interior of the gorge)
(Jade Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge)
(One of three small villages you pass along the way)
(There are a lot of amazing, but sheer, drop offs along the way)
(Walking on the interior of the canyon after climbing down a steep series of steps and ladders)
What an amazing place! Great photos!
Beautiful photos, Sarah! I’m glad you had the chance to see this place!
Look at that fog! Awesome!
Did you go with a guide or on your own?
On our own!!! Booyaa! There aren’t really guides in the gorge – just guys that follow you with donkeys in case you look out of shape. They wait until you are exhausted then charge you to carry your stuff. Ha.
love that place. daydreaming about yunnan…
Mike – Is this one of the billion places you’ve been to?! Hope NH is treating you well.
no, not yet. one that i, (we) will go to asap. i want to visit some of the hmong/miao villages in the area. but we are taking the in-laws to either portland or gloucester today! email me your address and i’ll check up on the house. 🙂 keep collecting the stories! as andy lee says, it’s as much fun being out traveling as coming back home with the great stories.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
